20 February 1916 General Haldane returned from leave & resumed command of the division. Beautiful day & more like May than February. 21 February 1916 The Brigade was doing its second week of training. This consists of a modified course of the home annual training commencing with sectional platoon & then company training finishing with battalion training & possibly two or three days brigade training. In order to keep the men smart & active a certain portion of the time is always allotted to Swedish Drill, running, rapid wading, saluting & handling of arms. Commanding officers are finding great difficulty with the training of their companies owing to the want of knowledge in their officers who have risen from the ranks & who now command companies. In one battalion
