French 36th Corps, commanded by General Lerveux , being a junction between us & the French it is a likely spot for attack & the Germans are within a few yards of the junction. The Germans occupy the high grounds as usual & can observe all our trenches. My work is particularly interesting & I am getting into it more each day. What I have seen of the battalions I like & think they are good material. There are five rifle regiments, the others are Light Infantry. I visited a portion of the line on the 12th at 4am leaving my Head Quarters at 3.30am. The men seemed keen & very cheerful but there is very little comfort in the trenches at present.
