and billet two miles beyond the town in a farm. Beautiful country and old chateaux. Try to catch fish in the afternoon in a small lake & march at 6pm. Parcels still pour in. We shall have too many socks soon. My wife writes to say she has received diary. Reached 5 October 1914 CRERY-EN-VALOIS at 3am after a weary march. Billeted in a very good house (?) with modern baths etc. Large mail four letters & a parcel from my wife. March at 6pm and reach [MARU OR MERU? - crossed out] at midnight. Roads in very good condition & a moonlight night. 6 October 1914 Leave again at 6am for PONT ST MAXENCE (5 miles) for entrainment. Cross the OISE at St Maxence beautiful old bridge destroyed by the French before the Germans arrived. We cross over pontoon bridge. Many French troops on the
