[Address added in a different hand: 39 Woburn Place Russell Square] British Embassy, Pera September 1, 1858 My dear Sir, I take the liberty of introducing to your kind notice Mr. Gottlieb Leitner, now proceeding to London with the intention of prosecuting his studies at King's College. He is the son of a German Medical Missionary for some time stationed in Constantinople, and his history and attainments will be best understood by his own letter to me which you will find on the other side. I have received from independent sources the most satisfactory testimonies to his correct moral conduct good principles and extensive acquirements. As his attainments have hitherto partaken more of an oriental character than of that course of study which would enable him to look for assistance from a scholarship at either Cambridge or Oxford, and as there are no peculiar advantages available to a young man whose principal study has been devoted to Eastern languages I have advised him to see you and ask your advice as to his future career. He seems likely to distinguish himself and to reflect credit on any college if the sphere best suited to him can be discovered. He has saved a little money to enable him to meet the first years' expenses and although his father will doubtless assist him, yet the young man very properly desires to relieve his parents by giving his spare time to teach German or any other of the languages which he knows. Pray excuse my troubling you with this letter, and believe me My dear Sir, Very faithfully yours, Chas C Gribble Chaplain to H.B.M. Embassy [title of addressee: The Rev Dr Jelf].
