Description (scope):
Photographs relating to T E Lawrence, including his photographs of crusader castles in France, Lebanon, Syria and Turkey.
Archival history and notes:
Duplicate sets of T E Lawrence's photographs are held in several repositories. The Society of Antiquaries holds prints of Crusader castle photographs. Captions on the backs of other photographs are in Liddell Hart's handwriting unless described otherwise. Crusader castle photographs have been dated as far as possible with reference to "Crusader Castles" by T E Lawrence (London, Folio Society, 1936, 2010).

Photograph of arch machicolations (openings used to drop material on attackers when defending a castle), castle of Krak des Chevaliers (also Crac des Chevaliers, Kalaat el Hosn, Hosn el Akrad, Qal'at al-Hisn al Akrad), Syria. Two copies, both captioned on the back 'Kalaat el Husn (Arch machicoulis - a Levant invention copied at Agde, Avignon & Southampton)'. One also captioned 'Taken by T E Lawrence'.

3 September 1914 Marched over the Marne at Meaux and billeted near VAUCOURTOIS in a very dirty farm. No one appears to know what is to happen. We hear that 3 German Army Corps are advancing south with Allied forces on three sides of them. A German aeroplane passed this evening. Much rifle firing but no effect. Orders issued not to fire at aeroplanes unless flying low. 4 September 1914 We were first told we were to stay here. Later orders received to be ready to move. First reinforcements expected today. All bridges over the Marne were destroyed yesterday. [Sept 5th - crossed out] Rode round with the General in the morning to select a defensive position in case of attack. Later our Battalion detailed for outposts, companies sent out, and an hour later outposts withdrawn to another position at dark on the
