are Englishmen to acquire the knowledge of those languages which wd render them fit for such positions? Turkish & Modern Greek is not taught, I believe, in any of the Colleges in England & the creation of a Professorship of the Turkish and Modern Greek languages in King's College would be felt to be a most timely addition to the Professorships already established in modern languages. Government will then very likely, availing herself of the opportunities offered by King's College, either create a system of patronage or of competition for official positions in Turkey or Asia Minor. In both cases it will be felt & acknowledged that King's College met a desideration. My own experience shows me that Missionary Societies would most gladly avail themselves of such an opportunity. The Church Missionary College wishing to send some of its young men to Turkey called upon me to instruct them in Turkish and I on acct of [ie, on account of] circumstances did not refuse. Would they not most gladly have sent them to King's College, if Turkish had been taught there? Of course they would, King's College occupying such a high standing among all the Universities and Colleges in England! Will you forgive me if I shall speak now of
