right was turned and orders were issued to retire. [to - crossed out] 27 August 1914 Halted at VILLERET for about an hour at midday & began retirement again. 9th Brigade forming rearguard. Scots Fusiliers rear battalion. A & D Companies occupied a ridge on right of our retirement and came under shell fire. The retirement was steadily carried out to VERMAND 28 August 1914 March at 1am and I commanded rear guard of 1 Battalion Field Artillery, Royal Scots Fusiliers & Irish Horse. Not interfered with and no sign of the enemy. Reached HAM at 11am, rested & had food, left at 2pm. Marched to CRISSOLLES & went into billets. 29 August 1914 At 7pm started to march to MONTOIS south of the Aisne. Arrived there at 30 August 1914 6pm. After halt of 3 hours in afternoon.
