one had heard that they advanced to the attack in masses but in the Mons canal action they extended early in the advance and advanced by rushes of six men or so at a time, preparatory to extending they certainly moved in mass at about range of 1500 yards but they were not exposed to artillery fire. After advancing to the attack they changed direction two or three times moving across our front but not offering a very large target to infantry. Their great aim seems to be to outflank and pour a heavy enfilade fire on our [flank - crossed out] trenches; their machine guns brigaded about 20 in number have on several occasions enfiladed trenches with great effect.
