heavy losses. Two battalions of the 7th Brigade were ordered up on our right. The enemy continually poured fire on the bridge & town. The transport was shelled & had to move. Vailly was in flames. C & B Companies under Major Forbes were ordered, during the afternoon, to move up on the right of 5th Fusiliers & they stayed there all night. My command was now so scattered that I had no one with me except signallers & bicyclists. Bethell was wounded in the foot. German guns kept up the fire on the bridge until after dark. At 10.30pm the Germans made a night attack on the 7th Fusiliers line but were driven back.
