hang on tenaciously. The Germans attack both spurs during the day but are repulsed. They bring a strong artillery fire to bear and search the woods with fire before their infantry advance. During the night Lieutenant Dunne arrives with 95 men. 20 September 1914 Quite a quiet night except for a few snipers. The Germans advanced their trenches and are now within 600 yards of our trenches. Heavy casualties in our trenches today from shrapnel & high explosives owing to proximity of the enemy. We had to keep the men in the trenches all day and occasionally heavy shell fire was opened on them from their left front. Six killed, fifteen wounded were the total casualties.
