Full text: Diary of service on the Western Front, 1914, World War One (volume)

23 September 1914 Still resting. Inspected billets in the morning. Pleasant warm day, but frosty at night. General Hamilton came round in the morning and expressed his pleasure at the work our men had done during the past week. I forgot to mention that yesterday Sir H Smith Dorrien called on us during the evening & congratulated us on what we had done lately. I believe also that General French spoke to some of the men & said how pleased he was. 24 September 1914 No orders for a move have been received so we are still enjoying a rest, beautiful sunny day. Letter from wife saying she had not received any letters since August 19th. Cannot understand it. Sent her a wire which I hope will arrive.
