People most hospitable and have a meal ready for us. Go to bed 8.30pm. 8 October 1914 An easy day. Orders to leave at 1.45am. General Bowes looks in during the afternoon. 9 October 1914 Billet at TOLLENT 12 miles march. Trout fishing to be had here. Native fishes with fly & minnow. Receive orders to march again at 2pm, ultimately 10 October 1914 changed to 1am. March to HESDIN about ? miles, halt there for 5 hours in the cold & then motor lorries take us to PERNES. Very cold and bad billets. Within sound of gunfire again. People from Lille streaming through here all the afternoon. They say the Germans are marching on Lille & the Mayor (?) has advised them to go. 11 October 1914 We move at 7.15am battalion & battery
