14 October 1914 Fell in at 5.30am only to go back to billets again later. Rained most of last night. The 7th & 8th Brigades renew the attack on the line CROIX BARBEE - PONT de HAEM (?) but it gets on slowly owing to German infantry on the left flank. We have the 2nd Army Corps making the flank movement. People are leaving their houses & trekking south. General Hamilton was killed by a shrapnel bullet this morning. He was standing amongst a group of six & was the only one hit. He will be a great loss to the 3rd Div. We all had the greatest confidence in him. He is to be buried tonight in the cemetery at LA COUTARE. The Battalion is still in reserve. Heavy firing along the whole line of 3rd & 5th Divisions shortly after dark & the battalion stood to arms.
