Our men were in the best of spirits but reservists look a little soft. At about 7pm we left SOUTHAMPTON & were told that we should arrive at our destination at 4am next day. I had a cabin to myself & slept soundly. 14 August 1914 Shortly after daylight we found ourselves outside HAVRE & we were tugged to a quay where we disembarked. At 8am we left the docks for the rest camp which was said to be six miles off. The heat even at this hour was terrific, & the march most of which was uphill & through cobbled streets tried the men severely. The people at Havre it struck me, were not very enthusiastic for French people, but I fancy that they had seen so many other troops passing that they had lost interest.
