casualties caused in the trenches by a light gun firing about 6 pound shell which burst on percussion & is fired only about 800 yards off - it has a high velocity & a flat trajectory - our guns have not been able to locate it. I hear that the attack of the 3rd Division on hill 76 near Kemmel was repulsed & the regiments lost fairly heavily - it was a very strong position to attack & required a very heavy artillery preparation before infantry could get through.
