At about 4pm on 22nd August the 1st Royal Scots Fusiliers took up a position on the canal which skirts the North edge of the town of JEMAPPES. 'D' company was detailed to hold a bridge about 1 mile west of the main bridge occupied by the headquarters of the battalion with the machine guns. The remaining hours of daylight were spent in preparing the position for defence as far as was possible. The accompanying rough sketch gives an idea of the bridge and surroundings [in ink possibly different hand: 23/8/14]

[note in pencil: This is not the bridge I suggested for the picture; Traill was on the left with Tullis; Head Quarters with Commanding Officers & Forbes in the Centre in front of Jemappes 1.1.24 Douglas Smith]
A barricade was made across the road at A and the two houses north of the bridge were loopholed. This advanced position was held by 1 platoon under Lieutenant.Stiven. A parapet of steel plates was erected on the bridge crossing the dyke at B to cover men sitting down on the roadway with a slit to fire through. The two houses C and D were loopholed. This main position was held by a platoon, and two platoons were kept in reserve at the level crossing.
