on the trenches. Jan 13-15 At LOCRE, ride to Berthen where there is a convalescent home for sick men - they get sent there for a change instead of going to the base. Every man who goes there has a complete clean up - hot bath clean clothes etc & has a comfortable mattress to lie on. Jan 16 Relieve the 7th Brigade in the trenches - in the morning ride out to see some trials of the trench mortar which consists of an iron pipe about 3 inches in diameter & fixed into a wooden stand at an angle of about 45°. It fires a bomb about the size of a large jam pot & the range is varied according to the amount
