20 February 1917 Decide to withdraw garrison of the post & not hold it. Instructions to be issued today. About 7pm a message S.O.S. was received from left brigade & our guns at once opened fire. About an hour later a report was received saying the Germans had attacked the post on three sides & had used flamenwerfer. The garrison had been shelled two hours previously. They put up a good fight but were rushed, & the Germans captured two officers & 35 other ranks and five Lewis guns.
