29 June 1916Today the 6" and 12" howitzers are bombarding the salients in front of Railway Wood in preparation for the raid tonight. If wind is favourable gas will be discharged. A south east wind is probable which would be unfavourable for our purpose. At midnight which was the hour fixed for the gas discharge the wind was almost due north so orders were given not to use gas as we wanted a west or northwest by west wind to make a gas discharge safe.
