24 July 1916 The Ulster Division took over our line today. I cut out from the Times an account of the fighting which took place at Fromelles. This account is absolutely untrue from beginning to end. It is quite inconceivable why reporters are allowed to print such purely imaginative descriptions. What actually occurs is as follows. General Haking decided to attack the German position on the Aubers Ridge with an Anzac Division & the 61st Division. The Artillery preparation was indifferent owing to the paucity of guns or ammunition & although some of the Anzac Division got into the German trenches they were quickly shelled out again.
