25 August - 4 September 1916 have actually penetrated to the eastern end of the village but were driven back by counter attacks. The second battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers suffered heavily in one of these attacks. It is strongly defended by machine guns and a battalion of infantry. This place is a mass of ruins, fallen trees and shell holes. The attack was postponed three times between August 24 & September 3rd. The latter date was adhered to. On the night of the 4th of September the Division was taken out of the line with the exception of two [the - crossed out] battalions of the 60th Brigade. Previous to the fight the 60th Brigade had suffered so heavily from shelling, wet and fatigue that they had to be pulled out of the line on the 29th & were replaced by the 47th Brigade of
