dressed them each in turn. The battalions turned out wonderfully smart considering the knocking about they had had. Reinforcements are coming in fast & some of the battalions are nearly up to strength. Many yeomanry drafts have been sent to us and they are very fine material but know nothing of infantry work. They had their first baptism of fire during the operations of October 7th and with good leading they fought extremely well
14 October 1916 Colonel Dundas; Martin; Generals Shute & Butler go on leave. Colonel Brown Clayton appointed to command the 59th Brigade. General Shute being promoted to the Naval Division. I have applied for leave & hope to get away on the 16th.
