19th [December] Heavy bombardment at 4.30am by the Germans on the front of 6th Division holding the Potisje line – accompanied by gas attack: the bombardment lasted for two hours at the end of which some Germans were said to have been seen getting out of their trenches – but immediately went back again – whether the Germans intended to attack with the infantry is not known, but I think it was probable, & finding that our men in the trenches had not suffered from the gas, they either could not get their men to advance, or cancelled the order.
