several shells in the grounds of our house; one shell burst at the corner of the house, but the only damage it did was to break some of the windows. A quiet night. 29 April 1915 A very quiet day & not much shelling – Ypres was in flames today – it is rumoured that the Kaiser is in this part of the world – but not confirmed. A Zeppelin reported to have passed over tonight. 1 May 1915 Fighting still going on on [sic] north of Ypres. The French are reported to have made an advance. Hill 60 was gassed but not attacked – it was thought that the fumes of the gases affected the Ger mans too and they were unable to advance. 2-3 May 1915 Heavy artillery bombardment on the Ypres salient & further attacks
