Maxim & Battalions are armed with 4 Lewis guns instead so we are better off by 16 guns than we were a week ago. Whilst I was on leave the 12th West Yorkshire had a small enterprise: two parties of 2 officers & 15 men each crept up to the German trenches & cut the German wire – one party was seen & the officer in command in getting over the parapet was wounded – the other party was more successful. A German sentry was attacked but the sergeants revolver missed fire & the sentry sent up an awful yell he was then killed & the party threw grenades at the Germans who were coming to the rescue – many must
