The country folk seem to be very obliging & do all they can to make the troops comfortable 8-13 February 1916 Two frosty nights followed by beautiful days, otherwise it has been very wet. Sir Douglas Haig rode round the 3 brigades on the 10th & as I am answering for General Haldane who is on leave I have to accompany him. 14 February 1916 The Germans have been very active during the last two or three days & their artillery has been shelling Hooge – Sanctuary wood & the trenches just north of the canal 15 February 1916 This morning we heard the Germans had attacked the Bluff & the trenches just to the north of it – they got a footing in some of the trenches but were bombed out of them except three apparently mines
