terrible – on this occasion we had 23 playing on the German line. The attack took place at 4.30am when it was dark & came as a surprise to the Germans who were carrying out a relief at the time 8 March 1916 Leave for the 20th Division at 10am & interview Lord Cavan the 14th Corps Commander at Cassel – he has a great reputation as a capable leader & a fighting general. I then motored on to the 20th Division Head Quarters near Elverdinghe – My predecessor General Davies had already left. I am introduced to a few of the staff, two of whom I had met before. Lt Colonel Dundas, Deputy Adjutant & Quarter Master General, & Major Clinch, Deputy Assistant Adjutant & Quarter Master General. Very cold & the ground covered in snow.
