16 March 1916 Enemy shelling very heavily all day & very little retaliation on our part. The Infantry in the trenches are continually complaining that they are being shelled & there is little or no retaliation on our part. The Germans have not very many guns here but have a lot of ammunition – the majority of shells are the 4.2 & 5.9 Howitzers. Visited the right sector at 5pm with General Shute. Germans are busy sapping towards our line. Our patrols are active at night but it is very difficult to cut off German patrols or working parties. It struck me very forcibly that the infantry in some of the trenches were not too happy – their surroundings are very unpleasant – trenches bad & weak - half buried bodies have been found in many parts of the
