at intervals. Walked round by St Jean and got a very good view of the right of our line across HILL-TOP. The latter is the key of the position on the right as it commands all the ground to the canal. Guards Division on our right. They had a severe shelling yesterday on the Canal bank. St Eloi mound and the German trenches just south of it were attacked this morning by my old brigade. I heard the bombardment starting at 5am and three mines were exploded at the same time. The 5th Fusiliers & 7th Fusiliers assaulted & carried the German trenches. It must have been a fine bit of work as the intervening bit of ground was very difficult owing to shell holes & other obstacles. I hear that they have maintained their position. The Germans did
