It simply means we have to sit & watch the men in the trenches being shelled & have little or nothing to send in reply – this must affect the morale of the troops, & it is not fair on them; they are quite pleased if the Germans get as good as they give. 8 April 1916 Our headquarters were shelled this afternoon for the first time. About twelve four inch shells fell into our camp but luckily caused no casualties. Two or three huts were damaged but officers & servants made for the dug outs.
