about 400 yards in depth. Maple Copse, about 300 yds west of Sanctuary Wood, was heavily shelled – 6000 shells were fired in this small copse in one hour & the casualties were very heavy, nearly a complete battalion being killed & wounded. The Canadians held them up on their reserve line & counter attacked that night but failed to regain their trenches. I hear they lost four thousand men in the two days fighting. About 100 miners were still in the shaft when the Germans came over & captured them all. Two 18 pounder guns belonging to my Division had been placed in the Canadian front area to sweep the front of Railway Wood in the 20th Division line – these two guns were lost but were destroyed
