before the Germans could get them. They were in gun pits about 500 yards behind our line. The Germans have now gained the high ground & can overlook my trenches in the right sector. It is hoped that a counter attack will be made to regain them. The Commander-in-Chief is most anxious that the troops in this area can hold the line without reinforcements being sent up, which would interfere with his plans for a big offensive very shortly. The Germans know an offensive is likely to take place & their game is to try and make us lose men by counter attacking & so spoil our chances of a successful offensive elsewhere. 6 June 1916 Germans attack Hooge & capture it from the Canadians 3rd Division. At about 3.30pm four mines were exploded – one in front of trenches of our left Brigade
