The weather has been very fine and warm, & we are gradually getting our trenches dry once more. The Russians have had a severe defeat I see, & have lost all the Carpathian passes – want of ammunition was no doubt responsible for this – unless the Russians can stem this advance we shall hear that Prysmysl has fallen & Lemberg besieged. In the meantime it will enable Germany to move troops from East to West. We quite expect another attack on Ypres salient & this time it is quite possible the Germans may try to get through on the south east of the salient.
