from where I could see what was going on. Before we could take Billwarde Farm there were three lines of German Trenches to get through sited on higher ground than ours. Some of the guns had been detailed to fire on enemy's guns, some on enemy's trenches & others on enemy's wire. On the artillery bombardment ceasing the three Fusilier regiments were ordered to advance & take the first line – two companies of each battalion in½ company column began the advance, with two companies in close sup- port. As soon as the first line of trenches had been captured the Lincolns & Liverpool Scottish were to advance & take the 2nd line. The infantry advanced with great dash, & took the first line
