a mixture of about twelve different units. Orders were issued to reorganise as far as possible but it was almost impossible to do this in the daylight with the trenches full of wounded & unwounded men, & it was not until after dark that this could be done. Two regiments of the 7th Brigade were ordered up to reoccupy the German third line, but they had been so weakened by casualties that they could not do it. The 42nd Brigade which was also ordered up was told to advance to the German third line, but being heavily shelled before they could advance, they did not get very far. At dark after the second artillery bombardment (3.30pm) & the attack had been finished – we held the German first line
