All our brigades are very weak now. The 59th Brigade can only put 900 rifles in the line, and the other two brigades about 1100 & 1200 each. The Guards Division is only to be out for a few days to reorganize & receive reinforcements. The Division Headquarters are in a German dug out on the western side of Bernafay Wood. My dug out is about 15 to 20 foot underground & quite comfortable. 17 September 1916 The weather turned very cold and rained hard. All the roads very much cut up & cross country tracks impossible.
