few old friends left. Two pipers played during dinner. Our Heavy Howitzers claim six direct hits on a small German work just north west of Hooge, beams were seen to fly about & six dead Germans lying on the debris. The Corps Commander has issued orders that we are to worry the Germans as much as possible, & prevent them from working. It is not easy especially with a shortage of ammunition for the guns. The salient is now a mass of batteries but chiefly field guns. What we want is more 6 inch & 9.2 howitzers – the 4.5 is a bit too small with which to knock about the enemy's works & the Field guns have been ordered not to use any High Explosive. The mountain guns (3 inch) which are attached to the division have no more High Explosive shells, so they are
