not knowing their ground. Heavy shelling knocked our trenches to pieces, & presumably the infantry attacked after the liquid fire but so far we have no details. HOOGE has been taken; this is an important tactical point as it commands the ground to the south & ZOUAVE Wood. In the evening the Germans attacked Zouave Wood, & effected a lodgement but a counter attack was made, & they were driven out again. 31 July 1915 Germans began by shelling the Zouave Wood very heavily but our heavy Artillery replied and prevented an Infantry attack. Orders received that the 9th Brigade is to be relieved by the 52nd Brigade of the 17th Division on the night of the 1-2 August. This Brigade is to take over trenches in the Ypres Salient near POTIJSE. We
