very heavily, but the Germans are working under ground, & I do not think the Shell will have any great effect. 4 August 1915 Visited the 5th Fusiliers & Lincolns in their trenches – had a very narrow shave of being hit whilst looking through a loop hole. I raised the slide about an inch, & a bullet hit the slide itself – just one inch away from the hole through which I was looking – luckily the bullet was not armour piercing. The Royal Fusiliers in reserve on the canal bank bathe & fish. 5-7 August 1915 Fairly quiet days – one of the Lincoln trenches badly "Whiz- banged". Royal Scots Fusiliers patrols meet German listening posts – one Royal Scots Fusiliers officer wounded – the officer Lieutenant Gordon fired five shots from his revolver & knocked over one German.
