8 August 1915 Heavy Artillery bombardment by French & 49th Division between 6 & 9pm to make the Germans think we mean to attack them. 9 August 1915 The 6th Division attacked HOOGE this morning – the attack was preceded by½ hrs Artillery bombardment – the 14th & 18th Brigades attacked – with 17th Brigade in reserve. At about 8am we received a message saying that the trenches north of Hooge had been captured & were being consolidated. 129 prisoners were sent back, & many others were killed by Shell fire as they were being escorted back. The Germans opened a very heavy bombardment shortly after, but no new has yet come in about a counter attack – it is quite certain they will attempt it.
