At 4.19½ three mines were exploded in German trench in front of B4 and this was the signal for the infantry assault. The Royal Scots Fusiliers had before the bombardment began placed their bombers with one platoon in the wood just short of the German trench. This portion of the German trench was not shelled. The wire had been cut by Royal Engineers with wire cutters and torpedoes each of the latter destroyed 50 ft of wire, & there were two. The Royal Scots Fusiliers, Royal Scots and 4th Gordon Highlanders captured the German 1st line the 1st Gordons on the Menin Road were held up by wire and could not progress - the two battalions of the 7th Brigade were unable to pass the wire also, & it apparently had not been destroyed by our artillery.
