priest for burial. Shortly after this large bodies of German Infantry in battalion masses appeared out of a thick wood about 1700 yards to our front. The Royal Fusiliers held the bridges west of Mons & 2 Companies 5th Fusiliers on our left. The German infantry made a splendid target for Artillery, but unfortunately we had none with us; we did not open rifle fire as we were anxious not to disclose our defences before it was necessary. In the meantime the German Infantry appeared to be passing towards Mons but they changed direction once or twice & ultimately an attack was deployed against Head Quarters bridge. At about 12.30pm a message from Officer Commanding Royal Fusiliers came in to say that they were going to retire through Mons. In the meantime our section of the defence kept up a fire at enemy's infantry & inflicted some loss from
