[Inserted message continued: the crossing north of last E in MARIETTE AAA All posts to be entrenched AAA Acknowledge & report position of affairs in your front. Addressed 4 Royal Fusiliers, 1 Royal Scots Fusiliers & 1 Northumberland Fusiliers R Stevens Captain BM [Brigade Major] 9 Infantry Brigade] loop holed windows. At 2.30pm I sent a message to C & B Companies to retire through FLENUS.½ hour later the centre section command to retire through Jemappes and D Company also fell back before this. The retirement was continued though Jemappes to Flenus and on arrival at Flenus we were soon fired on from all sides. Heavy losses here including Rose, Young, Edmunds etc. During the night the battalion billeted in the brewery. 24 August 1914 The retirement was continued through FLAMERIES to BERMERIES. No fighting during the retirement. C Company took up rearguard position near the cemetery outside the town on south. We marched across the French frontier & passed MALPLAQUET back through CAMP PERDU to BERMERIES where we bedded down in a beet(?) field no casualties.
