to the south east of us were retiring north followed by 3 French Corps. Our cavalry brigade fired at German rearguard at 6pm. The retiring German Corps must have passed within a few miles of us during the night. [In pencil, different handwriting, in margin: Advance begins] 7 September 1914 The present position at 7am is: Two or three French Army Corps advancing from [Paris - crossed out] south west between Meaux and Les Pleis-Placy: two French corps east of us. It looks as if the German corps will be cut off on the Marne or north of it. Marched through COLOMMIERS to LA BRETONNIERE arriving at dusk found at draft of 100 men under Lieutenant Tullis waiting for us at Colommiers. 8 September 1914 Attack of German rear guard at ORLY. Marched through REBAIS. Germans strongly posted in Orly which lies in hollow & safe from
