Full text: Diary of service on the Western Front, 1914, World War One (volume)

Artillery. 8th Brigade attacked but could not dislodge enemy. Royal Scots Fusiliers ordered to prolong the line of the Royal Scots to the right. A & C Companies told off to pass through wood & take enemy on right flank. D & B in support. Very difficult going. Dense wood. A Company was fired on & had two killed and some wounded. Total casualties 24 killed & wounded of battalion. [In pencil in margin: Germans put up a very fine defence & their rearguard work was an example of how it should be done] 9 September 1914 Crossed the Marne at NANTEUIL (Germans had not destroyed this bridge) & rested (?) at BEZU. Battalion in reserve. Just before dark we were ordered to march & bivouac a mile further north. Lincolns after hard fight put battery out of action [in pencil: & captured the battery.] 10 September 1914 9th Infantry Brigade formed advance guard to the division and 7th Fusiliers and ourselves formed the van & main guards. Found enemy
