[Note on facing page: Captain Briggs was one of my best officers and will be a great loss to the Battalion] Lincoln position I was asked to send the two companies to reinforce the right of Royal Fusiliers; both companies & machine gun took up posts in a turnip field and soon came under fire of German Maxims & shell; our people had no protection; the companies on left of ours began to retire, and Captain Briggs ordered his Company to crawl back gradually. Briggs was killed during retirement & there were other casualties. I rode back to give the General the situation and ask for support from our artillery, as up to date the German artillery was having it all its own way, & our artillery could not find any positions. Miller was hit in the shoulder by a bullet. Sergeant Adams & Abbott were also hit; the Lincolns retired behind the canal. I collected about fifty or sixty men of A & D & sent them up the spur again. In the mean time the 5 Fusiliers were suffering [in margin in pencil: Lieutenant Lyon acts as Adjutant vice Miller]
