men live during the day, as the trenches are under shell fire. Received report from aeroplane that there are large numbers of Germans about 1000 yards to our front. Everyone expecting night attack. Which, however, never came off. High explosives killed three & wounded eight this afternoon. Lincolns on our right lost several men. The sugar factory where D Company is has not [been - crossed out] so far been shelled. 28 September 1914 Heavy mist till 7am & quite cold. Artillery on both sides still pound away. Once in the morning and twice in the afternoon the Germans shell our position. Two men wounded. 29 September 1914 German for a wonder did not shell our position this morning.
