repulsed. We stood to arms but they did not come near us. I inspect the proposed defences of the town with Hurt in the morning. A little warmer than yesterday. 30 September 1914 Nothing moving. Quiet night. Did not get up till 4.30. Very cold job waiting about for daylight in case of attack; we hold a very strong position against night attack. I don't think the enemy could get far. Enemy have left us alone, & not a shell has burst over us. We are wondering what it means. Short of ammunition or is he retiring? 1 October 1914 Enemy left us alone again today. I think he must be thinning his line. A good deal of sniping but no casualties with us. A most perfect autumn day & the valley is perfect in the sun. Wooden
