march. We do not know our destination, some say Calais (!). Business here under normal condition. Men can buy plenty of bread. Entrain at 4pm and travel all night. Pass AMIENS & detrain at RUE. Men travel 40 in trucks with straw, officers in 2nd class carriages, [but - crossed out] it was quite comfortable. Great business going on at Rue. Trains full of French and English continually passing through. The battalion moves to a shed close to station & have their breakfasts. Troops have not passed through this country before & the people seem very glad to see us. Leave RUE for …. north of ABBEVILLE at 1pm & march 11 miles. People with apples & wine all along the road. Have to refuse the wine. Good billets at a farm house. [Note in margin in pencil: General Shaw in an awful temper because the men will accept these things & it is difficult to prevent the villagers from getting amongst the men]
