Full text: Diary of service on the Western Front, 1914, World War One (volume)

on 10th. 13 October 1914 Fall in at 5am & march to VIELLECHAPELLE still in reserve with 7th Division. The 2nd Army with 2 cavalry divisions are by way of being a turning movement, but judging by progress made today I am afraid it is hardly strong enough. The Germans seem to have little artillery on this flank, but their infantry put up a good fight and we do not gain more than about a mile facing east. During the afternoon the battalion is sent to support 8th Brigade, but not being required we moved into billets at Vielle Chappelle, the Church of which was destroyed yesterday. A few casualties in Lincolns & 5th Fusiliers. The adjutant was shot through both legs & arm. A quiet night.
